Companion texts to Duany Plater-Zyberk’s SmartCode are in the works, aimed at aiding implementation. William Wright of Balch & Bingham, an attorney based in Birmingham, Alabama, has written the SmartCode Manual, a guide to the adoption, implementation, and use of the SmartCode. It is due out later this year.
In addition, Eliot Allen of Criterion Planners/Engineers is in the process of creating a GIS-based system for applying the Transect to local geography, one of the trickiest aspects of implementing the SmartCode. “Applying the Transect to Local Geography: A Calibration and Delineation Method,” is in draft form and is awaiting comments from experts in the field.
