The current woes of the housing market and subprime mortgages are only the beginning of troubles for suburbia, according to an article in The Atlantic by Christopher Leinberger, a developer, visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution, and professor at urban planning at the University of Michigan. Leinberger argues that shifting demographics, tastes, and economic trends will bring about a continued revival of walkable, mixed-use centers at the expense of low-density, automobile-oriented suburbs. He cites foreclosures and empty houses in many relatively new suburban subdivisions as a sign of things to come.
