Dover Kohl led a charrette in November, 2007, to design Long Savannah in Charleston, South Carolina — a new town with close to 3,000 acres, according to James Dougherty of Dover Kohl. The development will include an 1,800-acre open space buffer, a kind of greenbelt. About 800 acres of the site will be developed, he told New Urban News. A report in the Charleston Post and Courier in April said approximately 4,600 housing units and 300,000 square feet of commercial space will be built on the site. The developers are Associated Developers Inc. and the SIM Group. The project, going through approvals, has the support of city officials. “As a planner, you see a few proposed settlements that you honestly believe will end up in a textbook or scholarly articles,” said Josh Martin, director of Planning, Preservation and Economic Innovation for the city. “This is one of a handful of settlements in the city limits that will be published and lessons will be taught to future generations on how to implement sustainable urbanism.”
