ERE/Yarmouth (formerly Equitable Real Estate), in their recently issued “Emerging Trends in Real Estate: 1998,” calls New Urbanism “the newest phenomenon to catch on in suburbia....” Expanding on ERE/Yar-mouth’s belief that “24-hour markets” are the safest investment options, the report states: “livability [is] the litmus test for determining the strength of real estate investment markets – both suburban and urban.” ERE/Yar-mouth is the leading U.S. manager of tax exempt assets invested in real estate. CNU members will receive a complementary copy of Emerging Trends with their 1998 membership renewal. CNU has issued a “Call for Presentations” at CNU VI. Those who are interested in presenting a project or research/academic paper, or in hosting an informal “salon” discussion group, please contact the CNU office for details on the format for submittals. CNU is specifically looking for presentations that closely relate to the themes of CNU VI (see article). Building on the recent George Washington University study showing that homes in the Kentlands development were receiving a $30,000 to $40,000 premium over nearby standard suburban homes, CNU has commissioned authors Mark Eppli and Charles Tu to conduct a national survey. The study will look at five to six existing New Urbanist developments around the country and compare their sales prices with those of nearby standard subdivisions. ULI has agreed to publish and distribute the results. CNU is seeking tax deductible contributions from individuals and corporations to help fund this effort.
