For exposing the full

For exposing the full scope and effect of sprawl, there is no better tool than aerial photography. That is clearly evident from the book Above and Beyond: Visualizing Change in Small Towns and Rural Areas, a fascinating look at traditional and contemporary development patterns in Vermont as seen from the air. The photos by Alex MacLean and the text by Julie Campoli and Elizabeth Humstone highlight the contrast between some of Vermont’s well-functioning small towns and the fragmented, use-separated pods in rural areas. But the book also offers examples of communities that have succeeded in luring back home buyers and business to small towns. The 225 color photos teach lessons that are applicable anywhere in the country. Above and Beyond is published by APA’s Planners Press. Contact: www.planning.org.
