Federal money finally came through to begin construction

Federal money finally came through to begin construction of Del Paso Nuevo, a 150-acre new urbanist neighborhood in Sacramento, California. Designed by Jeff Townsend of Vail Engineering, Del Paso Nuevo was one of the first Homeownership Zones approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in the spring of 1997. The Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency received $10.5 million to build a semicircular central park that will be the neighborhood’s center, a park along a stream corridor, and other improvements. Construction is scheduled to begin by the end of 1998. The site is a sparsely developed infill area adjacent to a very poor neighborhood. The city plans to create real estate value and spur private development. Developers will have to follow the master plan and design guidelines.u
