The first 20 homes are under construction in The Preserve, a TND in Birmingham, Alabama. Located in a heavily developed suburban area within walking distance of two public schools, the 300-acre project is being developed by US Steel, one of the major landowners and real-estate developers in the city. The master plan by Nimrod Long Associates of Birmingham features higher-density development and civic buildings around a 10-acre park that extends from the adjacent Moss Rock nature preserve. With approximately 750 lots for single-family homes, townhouses, and live/work units, The Preserve has a gross density of 2.6 units/acre. Looney Ricks Kiss Architects assisted Nimrod Long on the master plan, wrote the architectural guidelines, and will conduct workshops for builders.
