The first phase of the 50-acre Westport Waterfront began in January in Baltimore. The $1.2 billion mixed use urban center by Turner Development Company and the Carlyle Group is planned to include 2,000 houses, 2 million square feet of offices, 300,000 square feet of shops and restaurants, and 500 hotel rooms. It was called “one of the largest redevelopments to take place in Baltimore in recent history” by the Baltimore Business Journal. “We’re targeting platinum certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Neighborhood Development program and the soft shoreline will enhance our efforts,” said Turner Development President Patrick Turner. The developer will focus on streets and utilities in 2010. The first building, a 200-unit apartment building by the Landex Companies, is scheduled for construction in 2011, according to the Business Journal.
