Four years ago, the San Diego City Council

Four years ago, the San Diego City Council adopted a reuse plan for the San Diego Naval Training Center, to transform the site into an “urban village,” now called Liberty Station. The first residential neighborhood in the redevelopment area, The Village at NTC began construction this year. The 37-acre, 500-unit neighborhood was masterplanned by Torti Gallas & Partners/CHK and is being developed by a joint venture consisting of the Navy, Lincoln Property Company of Dallas and Clark Realty Capital of Bethesda, Maryland. The remaining 361 acres of Liberty Station is being developed by the McMillen Companies and is divided into four subareas: 1) An education area, where buildings will be renovated for educational use. 2) The historic core, which will have a mix of commercial, cultural, and residential uses. 3) A Waterfront area dominated by recreational facilities. 4) The Camp Nimitz area, where plans include a hotel and a marine sciences laboratory. Construction on the first 350 market-rate homes in a neighborhood adjacent to the Village at NTC begins this summer.
