Gaithersburg, Maryland recently adopted a Smart Growth Policy
ROBERT STEUTEVILLE    MAR. 1, 1999
Gaithersburg, Maryland recently adopted a Smart Growth Policy which expands on the Neighborhood Preservation and Smart Growth Initiative passed by the State of Maryland in 1997. The Policy establishes local guidelines for Smart Growth based on the Charter of The New Urbanism. The new urbanist features of the policy include a committment to revitalize Olde Towne (the deteriorating downtown area), a new street design code with narrower streets, flexible ordinances and zoning districts, and a mixed-use development zone in which the traditional neighborhood design (TND) option is encouraged. The TND option is available for both infill and new development sites.
