The Great Lakes Television Consortium has released “The Sprawling of America,” a comprehensive two-hour documentary in two parts examining land use over the last 50 years. The video is obviously slanted towards smart growth and New Urbanism, and may leave itself open to some criticism by not responding to opponents up front. Portrayals of innovative programs that attempt to offer solutions are sometimes presented as a bit too perfect. But the information is well-organized and presented, experts are articulate and thoughtful, and visuals — including archival news footage and ads touting the good life of the suburbs and benefits of the highway — are well-used.
