Gulfport, Mississippi — a city with a new urban plan for redevelopment to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina — is moving to hire Memphis developer Henry Turley “as the city’s design consultant to guide citywide rebuilding in an effort to revitalize neighborhoods and develop walkable communities,” according to the Sun Herald newspaper. Turley developed the traditional neighborhood development Harbor Town in Memphis and various downtown Memphis properties.
Gulfport City Council also decided to negotiate with New Orleans developer Pres Kabacoff, known for converting old warehouses and factories into mixed-use neighborhoods, on a contract to overhaul the 92-acre Veterans Affairs property on US 90, according to the Sun Herald. Negotiations also began with Kentucky-based Corporex on a major downtown redevelopment.
