An innovative public/private partnership between Bechtel Enterprises and local agencies in Portland, Oregon has been formed to build the $125 million, 5.5 mile light rail extension connecting downtown to the airport, scheduled for completion by 2001. Bechtel would contribute $28.2 million to building Airport MAX. The other regional partners — Port of Portland, Tri-Met, City of Portland and Metro — would contribute the remaining balance of $96.8 million, to be paid back through fares.
In funding the light rail line, Bechtel provides access to its Cascade Station project, which it is developing with the Trammell Crow Company. The 120-acre development will be a mixed-use, high-density urban project designed by Fregonese Calthorpe and Associates, LMN Architects, and W&H Pacific. The transit-oriented design is pedestrian-friendly and incorporates open space and view corridors to Mt. Hood, and is anchored at both ends by rail plazas.
