A master plan for LaGrange College in LaGrange, Georgia, 60 miles southwest of Atlanta, calls for new college facilities and private development around the town’s Lafayette Square. Urban Design Associates of Pittsburgh worked on the plan, which includes a new cinema, conference center, and hotel to enliven the square and serve both the college and the town of 26,000. “The old downtown is wonderful and largely intact, although it suffers from the same malaise as most traditional commercial districts,” says Larry Felton Johnson, an Atlanta new urbanist. Planning was supported by a $1 million grant from the Callaway Foundation.
