Middleton Glen, a senior independent living facility, is slated for fall, 1999, completion in the 149-acre Middleton Hills traditional neighborhood development (TND) in Madison, Wisconsin. Essex Corporation, the developer of the three-storey, 55-unit facility, chose to locate in Middleton Hills so elderly residents could walk to town center shops and amenities. Middleton Hills Project Director Paul Brunsell believes senior housing facilities represent an important use for a TND town center. They increase the diversity of residents and uses, he says, and provide another source of revenue for the developer. Laguna West in Sacramento, California, Kentlands in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and McKen-zie Towne in Calgary, Alberta, are two more TNDs where senior housing facilities are built or planned.
