Mike Lydon, who left Duany Plater-Zyberk & Co. in April and established a firm called The Street Plans Collaborative, has taken the lead in devising a SmartCode module that tells how to accommodate bicycling across the rural-to-urban Transect. The module explains where bicycle trails, bike paths, bike lanes, and shared vehicular lanes are suitable, by Transect zone.
Lydon, aided by former DPZ colleague Zachary Adelson, looks at how to provide bicycle parking — with standard bike racks, decorative bike racks (a form of public art for distinctive locales), bike shelters, bike lockers, bike sharing stations, and bicycle stations (which offer services such as repair and rental).
The module may be adopted as part of a SmartCode or used as auxiliary guidelines. It will be available free through the Center for Applied Transect Studies after peer review. See www.transect.org
