A Modern Arcadia, by Susan L. Klaus, published by the University of Massachusetts Press, tells the story of Forest Hills Gardens in Queens, New York. Designed in 1909 by Frederick Law Omsted Jr., this commuter rail suburb of Manhattan set one of the best precedents for transit-oriented New Urbanism today. Interestingly, Forest Hills Gardens — one of the most beautiful examples of the Garden City movement in the US — faced many of the same criticisms that new urbanists face today. Nearly 100 years later, it shows the enduring value of good design.
