In a move that may take it deeper into urban areas, the Home Depot chain is experimenting with downscaling the big box. A prototype store in Brooklyn is half the size of suburban Home Depots, and similar stores are planned on Long Island and in Chicago. At 61,000 square feet, the prototype store is still far bigger than the local hardware stores that now face increased competition.
