The National Center for Bicycling and Walking
The National Center for Bicycling and Walking, based in Washington, DC, teamed up with the Rhode Island Statewide Planning Program to conduct workshops in eight Rhode Island municipalities on how to make communities more pedestrian-friendly. Mark Fenton, former editor at large of Walking magazine, and Cara Seid-erman, manager of bike and traffic management programs for Cambridge, Massachusetts, led sessions in Providence, Pawtucket, East Providence, Warwick, Middletown, Burrillville, West Warwick, and Portsmouth, aided by funds from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Bill Wilkinson, executive director of the National Center, says his organization conducted more than 80 workshops in 12 regions of the US last year and intends to do more this year. The Center works with metropolitan planning organizations and other groups to organize the workshops. For more information, see www.bikewalk.org.
