A parking garage and other infrastructure are under construction in Atlantic Station, the 140-acre reclamation of the Atlantic Steel Mill site in Midtown Atlanta (see December 2000 issue). Master developer Jacoby Development has yet to finalize an agreement with a retail developer after several partners — Post Properties and retail developer Mills Corp. among them—pulled out of the project during the past year-and-a- half. Partners now include Beazer Homes and multifamily developer Lane Companies, who have committed to building a total of 1,350 apartments, lofts, and townhomes. Jacoby’s financial partner AIG Global Real Estate Investment Corp is building the first, 400,000 sq. ft. office building, to be designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merril. The recently announced plans to build an aquarium immediately adjacent to Atlantic Station may prove beneficial to the project by acting as a magnet for visitors and commercial interests. The Aquarium, funded in part by Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus, is slated to open in 2005, while the first phase of Atlantic Station should be open for business in the fall of 2003.
