The recent approval of Vickery, a new urbanist village development in Forsyth County, Georgia, (see October/November 2000) came at a price. Reacting to fears of density among the area’s residents, the Forsyth Commission cut the number of housing units by more than 20 percent. The 210-acre project may now include only 600 housing units, as opposed to the 774 units in the original plan by Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company. Of these, 457 will be single-family detached homes and the remainder townhomes and loft units. The commission changed the zoning category, effectively eliminating any apartment construction. Despite these setbacks, developer Hedgewood Realty expects to begin construction in the spring of 2001.
