Recent articles in two major dailies, the Seattle Times (April 4 and 11) and the Chicago Tribune (June 20), show that the mainstream press is becoming more sophisticated about the New Urbanism. Both articles were prompted by new urbanist developments in their respective regions. The authors — Linda Shaw for the Times and Mary Umberger for the Tribune — go beyond pointing out a “new trend” by acknowledging subtle differences between new urbanist developments. They distinguish between “pure” and “hybrid” versions and point out that creating the elements of a community takes many years.
