The Round, a transit-oriented development in Beaverton,

The Round, a transit-oriented development in Beaverton, Oregon, remains in development limbo (see July/August 1999 issue). Developer BCB Group has not been able to secure financing, and the City of Beaverton now has taken legal measures to force BCB into reorganization or bankruptcy in order to get the project underway. BCB retains the exclusive right to seek backers until March 15, but if no financing is available by that time, BCB is out, and the city or other interested parties may seek development money, says Linda Adlard, chief of staff in Beaverton’s mayor’s office. The area around the light rail station has an approved master plan that any new developer must follow, Adlard says, and though design changes can be made, they would cause substantial delays. The light rail line has been very successful in Beaverton, where the projection for number of riders in the first year was met after the first month. The city still very much wants The Round built, Adlard says, and has already invested around $6 million in streets, sewers and other infrastructure.
