SmartCode & Manual now in print

The SmartCode & Manual, which is having such a significant impact on redevelopment of the Gulf Coast, is now in hard copy print for the first time — published by New Urban Publications, publisher of New Urban News. The SmartCode & Manual is a seminal work of the New Urbanism by Andres Duany, William Wright, and Sandy Sorlien. It includes the complete SmartCode version 8.0, plus detailed notes explaining and amplifying each section along with highly useful supporting materials and tips on implementation. It is the culmination of years of work by Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company (DPZ) and other firms building on the Lexicon of the New Urbanism and the Transect. The first 400 copies of the book were shipped to Biloxi, Mississippi, for a SmartCode workshop hosted by the Miami firm PlaceMakers in early March. Most of the 11 Mississippi coastal communities are moving toward adopting a version of the SmartCode (see article on page 7). Municipalities in Louisiana may be headed in the same direction, with Lake Charles already endorsing the SmartCode in principle. DPZ is heading a series of postdisaster charrettes in Louisiana.
