Smith Wilson and Pamela S. NeSmith have nearly completed the conversion of a former Coca-Cola bottling works in Athens, Georgia, to townhouses, flats, restaurants, shops, and offices. The two Athens-based developers have sold all but 2 of the 13 residential units in the three-acre, seven-building complex, situated two blocks west of downtown. Most of the commercial space has been leased. “The Bottleworks” — Wilson and NeSmith’s name for the development — consists of six buildings and additions dating from 1927 to 1985, plus a new three-story building they constructed, which is meant to mimic a classic corner building downtown. The structures are interspersed with landscaped courtyards and alleys, creating what the developers call “a small-town center in a walkable community where one can live and work.”
