Task forces benefit from infusion of new leaders

CNU welcomes the addition of several new task force co-chairs, a group of new leaders with fresh ideas and talents for the task forces. Real estate consultant William Tucker brings an impressive 20 years of new urbanist development experience to the Real Estate & Development Task Force as it gears up for a Congress in Providence, Rhode Island, focused on the developer’s role in new urbanism. The Environment Task Force welcomes two leaders who have helped steer the LEED-ND initiative, Tom Richman as a CNU representative on the LEED-ND Core Committee and Matt Raimi as a co-author of a research review for the LEED-ND project on the relationship between public health and urban form. To the Transportation Task Force, Norman Garrick brings a substantial transportation engineering background and a record of valuable volunteer consultation on the urban thoroughfares project — a joint project between CNU and the Institute of Transportation Engineers. Jennifer Hurley comes to the Planners Task Force after helping establish the Next Generation of New Urbanists. According to G.B. Arrington, CNU’s Chair of Task Forces, “I’m constantly inspired by the willingness of new urbanists to give back to their community as volunteers. This new group of chairs helps showcase the tremendous depth, quality, and commitment within CNU. It’s another indication the task forces are well positioned to tap into our membership to foster and document the latest innovations in new urbanist practice.” CNU welcomes these new task force leaders and looks forward to advancing the new urbanism movement with their efforts. Read more about them: Real Estate Development William Tucker joins the Real Estate & Development Task Force with over twenty years of experience in real estate development, master planning, and financial assignments. As primary development consultant to Arcadia Land Company and as principal of Tucker & Associates, Bill invests in and oversees “nonmainstream” traditional neighborhood developments. Before forming his own firm, Bill worked as a CEO consultant, specializing in property entitlements, project feasibility, and valuation of alternative land-use configurations. A graduate of Duke University, Bill also holds an MBA from the University of Chicago and has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. Environment The Environment Task Force welcomes Tom Richman and Matt Raimi as new co-chairs. Tom has twenty years’ experience in landscape architecture, planning, and urban design. Prior to cofounding Catalyst in 2001, he directed Tom Richman & Associates. Tom has demonstrated a vision for compelling public places in award-winning projects, including Palm Drive at Stanford University, an elegant urban plaza in San Francisco’s Mission district, and a courtyard plaza for the historic Fox Theater in San Jose. Tom is also a nationally recognized leader in stormwater quality management and other strategies for sustainable design practices. He holds a BA in Classics from Stanford University and a BS in Landscape Architecture from University of California, Davis. Matt Raimi, AICP, is a Senior Associate at Design, Community & Environment in Berkeley, CA. His work focuses on building more livable and sustainable communities through a participatory decision-making process. Matt has worked on regional planning, comprehensive planning, public outreach, and site planning projects in California’s San Francisco and Central Valley areas and on the East Coast. As Task Force co-chair, he aims to continue CNU’s effort on LEED-ND, explore how principles of environmental sustainability can be incorporated into comprehensive plans, and educate CNU members about tools and techniques for improving the environmental benefits of New Urbanism. Planners As chair of the Planners Task Force, Jennifer Hurley, AICP, brings nine years of professional experience that ranges from program director of a community service internship program to three years with the Philadelphia City Planning Commission. Drawing on her background in conflict resolution, Jennifer has developed a focus on public involvement. She is a past fellow of the Knight Program in Community Building at the University of Miami’s School of Architecture. She received a Master of Regional Planning from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and a BA in Anthropology from Bryn Mawr College. Transportation The Transportation Task Force welcomes as its chair Dr. Norman Garrick, Associate Professor of Engineering at the University of Connecticut. Norman specializes in planning and design of urban transportation systems, including transit, streets, highways, bicycle, and pedestrian facilities. Norman’s career bridges academic study and engineering practice. He has served as a teacher, researcher, transportation planning consultant, and as construction engineer. Norman holds a PhD and MS in Civil Engineering from Purdue University and BS in Civil Engineering from the University of the West Indies, Trinidad. A Fulbright Fellowship took him to Kingston, Jamaica, last fall for four months, where he researched transit, motorization, and urban transformation in this rapidly changing city. u
