TND park going to the dogs

Glenwood Park, the award-winning traditional neighborhood development in Atlanta, now has a park for dogs and their owners. Green Street Properties, which is developing the 28-acre community, donated land for a dog park after discovering that “there were more residents who had dogs than we’d expected, and some of them enjoyed letting their dogs run off-leash in the main park,” according to manager Paul Boat. The 50-by-140-foot dog park, situated next to a community garden, contains a gazebo donated by Wag-a-Lot, a local dog care and boarding company. The Glenwood Park Community Association supervises the dog area. Anyone using it must pay a $175 initiation fee plus an annual operational fee of $60. The owner also pays an extra $30 annually for each additional dog. Dogs in the park must wear a membership tag and a rabies vaccination tag. Of Glenwood Park’s anticipated 375 residential units, 194 have been built, with buyers paying prices ranging from $134,000 to $1 million. The project, two miles east of downtown Atlanta, will boast about 30,000 sq. ft. of retail, 20,000 sq. ft. of restaurants, and 20,000 sq. ft. of offices when complete. So far, several businesses are operating — two restaurants, a coffee shop, a hair salon, a children’s music class, a day spa, a gym, and a dry cleaner. The main park, Glenwood Park, covers 1.5 acres and includes a pond, a large grassy area, a playground, and a terrace furnished with café tables. The development also has a separate town square containing a bocce court. Among the several awards the brownfield project has received are the 2006 “development of the year” award from the regional organization of the Urban Land Institute and a Charter Award in 2003 from CNU. Master planners were Tunnell-Spangler-Walsh & Associates and Dover, Kohl & Partners.
