Torti Gallas and Partners/CHK, of Silver Spring, MD, is working with the military’s housing privatization program and creating award-winning TNDs such as the Naval Training Center in San Diego, CA. Named the 2002 “Niche Market Project of the Year” by Multi-Family Executive Magazine, the Naval Training Center is quickly becoming a showcase for neo-traditional neighborhoods, and other branches of the military are showing interest. The development includes 500 two- and three-bedroom residential units, a community clubhouse, sport fields and 7.2 acres of open area. Formed in 1996, the Military Housing Privatization Department was created to address “the poor condition of Department of Defense-owned housing and a shortage of affordable private housing of adequate quality.” Currently working on ten different military installations, including the Presidio and Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, and Fort Belvoir in Virginia, Torti Gallas hopes to be involved with many more refurbishments. While garnering professional accolades is great, perhaps the highest praise is coming from those who served. “You get feedback,” reports John Torti, president/CEO of Torti Gallas, “like, ‘Whoa! If I could live here, I’d reenlist!’”
