The Town Council of Huntington, New York, approved

The Town Council of Huntington, New York, approved smart growth principles on October 5, 1999, that support the development of walkable, mixed-use, neighborhoods. A nonprofit citizens group, Vision Huntington, spearheaded an effective campaign to get public officials and business leaders in the suburban Long Island town of 200,000 people to adopt smart growth principles. In 1998, Vision Huntington offered to spend $10,000 for a smart growth speaker series, if the town put up matching funds. Town Council agreed on the condition that a Smart Growth committee be formed with business leaders and stakeholders to select the speakers. The speakers who have come to Huntington are leaders and spokespersons for the New Urbanism and smart growth: architects Victor Dover, Ray Gindroz, John Massengale, and Catherine Johnson, planners Jonathan Barnett and John Fregonese, Harriet Tregoning of the EPA’s Smart Growth Network, Robert Yaro of the Regional Plan Association, Dan Burden of Walkable Communities, and developer Vince Graham.
