Overview and Summary
The Charlotte Department of Transportation is a leader in progressive transportation and is seeking a talented individual to work on a wide variety of plans, policies, and projects to support Charlotte’s continued evolution into a city whose residents, workers, and visitors can travel throughout the community safely, whether they are walking, bicycling, using transit, or driving.
The Transportation Planner II position is housed in the newly formed Strategic Mobility Division of the Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) and is part of a multidisciplinary team responsible for planning Charlotte’s future mobility networks and investments. This team collaborates across departments, partner agencies, and the community to achieve multi-modal solutions that shape and support Charlotte’s rapid growth and development. Critical responsibilities of this Division include implementation of the Strategic Mobility Plan, the review and implementation of transportation elements in the UDO, and the development and programming of $60 to $80 million in locally funded multi-modal capital projects annually.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Transportation Planning:
- Participates in and/or leads the development of long-range transportation policy, plans, programs, projects, and initiatives
- Participates in and/or leads the implementing components of the City’s Strategic Mobility Plan
- Participates in and/or leads the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Charlotte Streets Map
- Participates in and/or leads the review and implementation of transportation elements in the UDO and Streets Manual
- Maintains and expands collaborative relationships with other City and County departments and agencies (including the Charlotte Planning, Design and Development Department and the Charlotte Area Transit System) and other CDOT Divisions/staff to advance ongoing initiatives to integrate transportation and land use planning
- Represents the Strategic Mobility Division on interdisciplinary teams with internal and external stakeholders
- Participates in regional transportation planning activities associated with the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO)
- Develops and conducts, as necessary, public involvement processes related to area plans or other policies/plans
- Performs all other duties as assigned
Community & Stakeholder Engagement:
- Engages and develops collaborative relationships with stakeholders, community groups, and public/private agencies to successfully implement the City’s transportation policies and programs
- Supports CDOT leadership in responding to City Council and the City Manager’s Office on transportation planning initiatives and projects
- Makes presentations to the community, civic boards, and/or professional peers on transportation initiatives and growth-related transportation issues
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Transportation Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Geography, or a related field
- Certified Planner (AICP), Professional Engineer (PE), and/or Professional Landscape Architect (PLA)
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university with major course work or degree in transportation planning, urban planning, transportation engineering, geography, or a related field
- At least 3 years experience in transportation planning, engineering, or a related field
- An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, an abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties
