Description
The Nashville Planning Department is seeking a creative and forward-thinking urban and architectural designer for the Urban Design section within the department’s Design Studio. It is an exciting time to join this team which is driving high-quality, sustainable architectural and urban design in one of the country’s fastest growing and most diverse metro regions.

We are looking for a team-oriented design professional, architect, engineer, or planner dedicated to improving the design of our community and how people connect to their surrounding environments. The ideal candidate will be experienced working at the intersection of architecture, urban design, and resilient planning—utilizing innovative, strategic design thinking to solve complex urban challenges. They will be motivated to collaborate with a diverse constituency and able to clearly communicate complex design ideas in graphic and verbal form.

Typical Duties

  • Work closely and collaboratively with planners in the Urban Design section
  • Design and develop graphics, maps, presentations, communication, and engagement materials that convey planning, architectural, and urban design ideas
  • Manage and maintain the ArcGIS Urban models
  • Research, analyze, and synthesize findings, best practices, innovative solutions, and case study/precedent projects to design challenges
  • Contribute to design reviews for projects across the Department and with other Metro departments
  • Work iteratively with development teams to improve the design quality of their projects
  • Work jointly with other divisions within Metro Planning to develop design scenarios and to provide architectural and urban design expertise on projects
  • Collaborate with community members and elected leaders on planning and urban design initiatives in their neighborhoods

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree years and 2 years of relevant experience OR Master’s degree in architecture, urban design, urban planning, or related field.
  • Fluency in architectural design & urban design best practices
  • Proficiency in geospatial analysis utilizing ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Urban
  • Fluency in utilizing Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) to create compelling graphics, maps, presentations, animations, and documents
  • Fluency with 3D modelling (SketchUp or Rhino)
  • Professional certification or licensure in relevant field preferred (AIA, AICP, RLA, CNU-A, LEED AP, SITES AP)
