Urban Planning Associate

Salary: $70,000 to $82,000

The Associate is a critical position at LWC, supporting our urban planning and economics teams in project procurement, execution, and management. LWC aims to provide an environment where our team members can strengthen existing skills, acquire new ones, and advance within the firm. The firm performs most effectively at the nexus of urban planning and land use economics. Current engagements include code updates in Columbus, Ohio, and Napa, California as well as Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. LWC is also leading Market Studies and Financial Feasibility Analysis engagements across California and in Arizona. We are currently seeking an Associate with the following skills and professional qualifications. A preferred candidate may not have all these skills but a solid combination thereof.

Preferred Skills and Professional Qualifications

  • Excellent written, spoken communication and presentation skills
  • Excels in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite (high proficiency in InDesign a plus)
  • Experience writing and evaluating long-range plans, regulatory and policy documents
  • Familiarity with using and/or writing zoning and development codes
  • Interest in and knowledge of economics and financial impacts on urban planning
  • Familiarity with the impacts of urban design in urban planning and policy development
  • Self-motivated, enjoys working independently in an otherwise collaborative environment
  • Interest in interplay among zoning regulations, long-range planning, design and financial/market performance
  • Professional appearance and demeanor
  • Bachelor’s Degree in urban planning, public policy, community design or related subject is required, Master’s Degree is preferred
  • 2 – 3 years of professional experience in urban planning is preferred
  • Experience or academic training in California planning or related field is a must

Responsibilities

  • Working closely with LWC Interns, Associates, Lead Associates, Senior Associates and Directors on execution and management of project deliverables and proposals
  • Conducting background research; compiling, organizing and analyzing data; and summarizing findings
  • Performing technical analysis, writing, and updating zoning and development codes; including use- based, form-based, and performance-based approaches
  • Researching, writing, and editing long-range plans, housing elements, specific plans, corridor plans, TOD plans, developing draft policy language related to land use, community design, housing, and economic development
  • Supporting project managers in the preparation of community outreach strategies, peripheral material, presentations, and surveys; participating in public meetings; gathering and summarizing community input; presenting to the internal team and in public settings
  • Contributing to report production and management, including graphic layouts, design elements, technical writing, edits and revisions, and coordinating internal input and input from project partners
  • Participating in and facilitating meetings with clients, consultant partners and the internal team
  • Mentoring Interns
  • Preparing graphics, maps, data and infographics to effectively communicate findings and recommendations in codes, proposals, reports, memos, web site and social media, using InDesign, Illustrator, SketchUp, Photoshop, and GIS
  • Managing multiple assignments with specific deadlines
