Closing: 5:00 PM ET on Friday, February 28, 2025

Company Description

TSW is a full-service planning, architecture, and landscape architecture firm comprised of talented professionals who work collaboratively to provide our clients with extraordinary designs for communities, buildings, and greenspaces. We were founded in Atlanta, Georgia, as a corporation in 1990 and have expanded to include offices in Lexington (KY), Tulsa (OK), and Chattanooga (TN). For more than 35 years, we have been proud to create award-winning plans that embody the principles of livable communities: walkability, sense of place, compelling public spaces, human-scaled buildings, and connectivity. We are involved in all stages of community planning and design, including outreach, visioning, coding, site planning, architecture, streetscapes, and open space design, and are proud to see many of our projects move from concept to completion in a range of diverse locations throughout the United States.

Position Overview

TSW is seeking a talented Urban Design Practice Leader with a passion for creating great communities at a variety of scales and for a range of project types. As the leader of our urban design team, the ideal candidate is someone with a record of building a successful business, understanding how to manage a studio of design professionals, writing winning proposals/contracts, building successful teams, and delivering amazing work across a wide range of project types, including public agency, institutional, and private clients. This position will take a leadership role within our Atlanta urban design studio, but will also contribute to growth and development of projects and design staff within our other offices.

Your Role

As the Urban Design Practice Leader, you will focus on mentoring and training current design staff while also profitably growing the urban design practice across the company. Responsibilities

You will be:

  • Building and leading the company-wide Urban Design Practice Area.
  • Leading accounts and projects from business development presentations through strategy, design, and delivery.
  • Taking a lead role in business development, identifying and cultivating new client relationships, particularly in the Southeast region of the U.S.
  • Maintaining consistent market and business development visibility for the company within the urban design field.
  • Leading all private sector land planning work within the firm and collaborating on private Architecture and Landscape Architecture work as needed.
  • Ensuring the urban design team supports our community planning municipal work when needed.
  • Developing and mentoring each design team member across the company’s four offices both in technical design and the consulting skillsets of marketing, project management, and business development/client relationships.
  • Applying walkable, sustainable, and urban design principles to a range of public and private projects.
  • Collaborating with company principal group and other studio leaders on staff utilization and business development.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in urban planning, urban design, architecture and/or landscape architecture related to the delivery of walkable urbanism.
  • A relevant degree in urban design, urban planning, landscape architecture, and/or architecture. Minimum undergraduate degree is required. Master’s degree is preferred. Work experience will be considered in lieu of degree on a case-by-case basis.
  • Outstanding ability to verbally and graphically communicate design concepts.
  • Knowledge of urban planning, zoning, entitlements and technical issues.
  • Established network of clients and contacts with a history of excellent client satisfaction.
  • Business development experience, including proposal writing, client interviews, and closing deals.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising and mentoring young designers and planners.
  • Great references and a top-notch personal portfolio of work.
  • Critical thinking skills that incorporate and blend innovative ideas in land use, landscape architecture, urban design, and planning and designing walkable urbanism solutions.
