Principal Transportation Planner

Salary: $82,319 - $107,000 annual compensation

A Principal Transportation Planner career is available with the City of Fort Worth Regional Transportation & Innovation Division of the Transportation and Public Works (TPW) Department. This role will be responsible for scoping, delivery, and oversight of smart corridors, active transportation, transit, micro-mobility, and other comprehensive transportation planning and project development activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in planning, civil engineering, or a related field
  • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in multimodal transportation, land use coordination, NEPA, regional and local planning, engineering, highway or street construction, maintenance, and operational activities. 
  • Two (2) years of administrative and supervisory responsibility.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in planning or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E), American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), and/or Congress of New Urbanism credentials.
  • Proficient in the use and application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat), and Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access).

The Principal Transportation Planner job responsibilities include:

  • Management of the City’s Master Transportation Plan development and administration process
  • Management of land-use transportation studies at the corridor and sub-regional level.
  • Intergovernmental project and policy coordination with Texas Department of Transportation, North Central Texas Council of Governments, Trinity Metro, Counties, and other agencies.
  • Development of funding applications including federal discretionary and formal grants
  • Development of capital project scopes of work for eventual engineering, design and construction.
  • Maintaining knowledge of transportation, land use, and smart cities best practices.
  • Management of the city’s bicycle and safe street programs.
  • Advising City staff, City Council, the public, and external stakeholders on transportation planning policy issues such as the zoning/form-based codes, multi-modal transportation, environmental processes, state and federal requirements, safety, and equity initiatives using data-driven and inclusive approaches;
  • Building consensus among competing interests on politically sensitive transportation projects while working with property owners, adjacent jurisdictions, the MPO, TxDOT, senior staff, the public, and City Council;
  • Preparation of written and visual materials for presentations to diverse groups
