Completed Highways to Boulevards projects highlight the potential impacts and benefits of removing highways from cities. Each example provides useful insights into the political and social capital necessary for a successful removal effort and serves as inspiration for future highway removal projects. Several also offer cautionary tales about building new, overly-large roads when removing highways and the need to establish anti-displacement protections that keep residents currently living around highways in place once the highway’s gone.
